Programme Synopsis 'Songwriting with My Guitar' integrates 2 popular activities among our youth today: Playing the Guitar & Composing their own songs. Students will experience an easy method of writing a song with their guitar through group collaboration. The guitar. being a harmonic instrument, is capable of creating chords, melodies and bass lines. Thus, this programme primarily initiates the students into a composition process which encompasses these 3 fundamental attributes of the instrument. Together with lyrics, complete song arrangements can be realized with the voice and a few guitars. In this programme PHASE ONE: Playing the Guitar - Learn the fundamentals of chord-playing and melody-playing on the guitar - Learn basic chord theory and the common chord progressions(I,IV, V) found in a key - Learn various strumming/plucking techniques found in pop, jazz and latin styles of music PHASE TWO: Songwriting Skills - Understanding Prosody and its usage in poetry - Learn lyric-writing and its intimate relation to melody - Understanding harmony and chords used in pop songs - Understanding song form & structure - Appreciate the songwriting history in Singapore (Heritage songs) PHASE THREE: Collaboration / Project Work / Recording - Working in groups and writing a 2-3mins song - 'From sketching to refinement', how to draft a song and polish it gradually - Recording the song - Performance & Assessment For the assessment, students will be required to perform their 2-3 minutes song. They will present it in groups.
