Programme Synopsis “Jazz was everything. A weltanschauung, a personal identity, a metaphysics, an epistemology, an ethics, an eros, a mode of sociality—an entire way of being.” - David Savran, 2006 Ever wondered how the modern phenomenon “Gatsby Parties” came about? During the 1920s, Jazz tunes filled the halls with specially curated entertainment to capture its atmosphere that exudes luxe and opulence. This programme features Fitzgerald’s most iconic novel, The Great Gatsby and how it remains relevant in the post-modern world. This edutainment performance educates students about the popular Jazz music style during the 1920s and its influence from the book. An Introduction to 1920s Jazz showcases the revolution of Jazz from its early stages and its way of capturing the book’s atmosphere, from film adaptations to the by-now-common phenomenon of the Gatsby party. Schools have an option between our jazz trios, quartets, quintets and big band performances to present this informative performance to all types of learners via interactive segments like Quizzes and Jamming sessions with interested and skilled students. Students will be able to understand and appreciate the art of societal revolutions in Jazz, be exposed to new genres of music and to develop a liking for more niche genres of music. Sample Content presented in the programme: - History of 1920s Jazz (The beginning of the Jazz Age) - Understanding the significance of Jazz to the people of the era - Identifying the era of jazz music that is performed - Understand the role of Jazz in the era of The Great Gatsby - Identifying the structure of 1920s Jazz - Understanding socio-political impacts on music during this era - Identify unique instruments that comprises a jazz/big band - Understanding the functions of the various instruments - Distinguish jazz genre of music from others - Be introduced to the different roles of the band (lead instruments, rhythm instruments, woodwind, brass, etc.) - The role of a live band when accompanying a singer or lead instrument and more… This blended programme has customisable themes and is available both with LIVE and DIGITAL Versions. For DIGITAL versions, students will experience the performance through platforms (such as YouTube / Vimeo / Zoom) to watch in the classrooms/during home-based learning. The DIGITAL version is a synchronous LIVE performance broadcasted from a studio, and the performances, interactions and Q&A are conducted in real-time. Asynchronous modes can be arranged and interaction segments can be done live via Zoom.
