Programme Synopsis What is Jazz? Jazz music is a broad style of music characterized by complex harmony, syncopated rhythms, and a heavy emphasis on improvisation. This programme is an edutainment programme where instructions are presented in a performance manner. Started by black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana, many variations of jazz have developed and evolved in the early twentieth century. Our jazz trios, quartets, quintets and big band performances will allow students to understand Jazz’s distinctive rhythmic patterns that are unique to the genre, raising awareness and appreciation to its art of improvisation. Students will be able to understand more about historical influences on jazz music and the many subgenres of jazz that can be derived from societal revolutions. The programme also opens up doors to students that are open to explore new genres of music and to develop a liking for more niche types of music. Sample content presented in the programme: - A history introduction and timeline of jazz evolution - Identifying which era of jazz music that is performed - Identify unique instruments that comprises a jazz/big band (lead instruments, rhythm instruments, woodwind, brass, etc.) - Understanding the functions of the various instruments - Distinguish jazz genre of music from others - The role of a live band when accompanying a singer or lead instrument - Understand how jazz music is applied in the entertainment industry today e.g. film soundtracks in Hollywood movies - Explore the various subgenres of jazz in swing, bossa, bebop, latin, samba and many other forms - Using a popular song and jazzify it in many different ways - and more… This blended programme has customisable themes available to incorporate National Day Celebrations, Mother-Tongue week, Art & Music Week, Children’s Day and more into both LIVE and DIGITAL Versions. Songs from other genres can be jazzfied to other Short interactive segments will be made throughout the performance to encourage audience participation and engagement through platforms like Ahaslides and Kahoot! For DIGITAL versions, students will experience the performance through platforms (such as YouTube / Vimeo / Zoom) to watch in the classrooms/during home-based learning. The DIGITAL version is a synchronous LIVE performance broadcasted from a studio, and the performances, interactions and Q&A are conducted in real-time. Asynchronous modes can be arranged and interaction segments can be done live via Zoom. The Tote Board Arts Grant was introduced in 1995 to encourage the development of a vibrant arts culture in schools, and to promote arts appreciation amongst students.

Each year, all MOE schools and ITE Colleges may opt-in to receive the Arts Grant. Schools may use the grant to subsidise the purchase of programmes under the NAC-AEP and for the Artist-in-School Scheme (AISS).

All approved programmes are listed on the NAC-AEP Directory and come with a valid Letter of Eligibility.

Please ensure that a valid Letter of Eligibility (LOE) is obtained. Note that MOE procurement guidelines apply.

Payment should be made directly to the programme provider. Claims for the Arts Grant should be made via IFAAS and in accordance to Grant Guidelines.

Programme providers are permitted to make changes to the following aspects of an NAC-AEP, according to the school’s needs:

  • Programme duration, including no. of sessions
  • Cost of programme
  • Class size



Under the above conditions, schools can make claims based on revised programme costs using the same Programme ID listed on the Letter of Eligibility (LOE).

The following changes are not permitted when customising programmes:

  • Changes to content
  • Inclusion of non-approved instructor(s)
