Programme Synopsis Uncover the ancient and captivating art of metal relief sculpting also known as copper tooling, a craft where soft metal is meticulously shaped into expressive designs. This hands-on workshop invites students to explore a tradition found in diverse ancient civilizations and vibrant contemporary art, including the works of pioneering Singaporean artists. Students will learn to transform metal sheets into detailed artwork, depicting patterns, motifs, cultural elements, or their own imaginative compositions. They will be guided through careful planning and the step-by-step processes of design transfer, embossing, chasing (defining lines), texturing, and finishing – all using safe, quiet non-hammering techniques suitable for a school environment. This approach not only makes the craft accessible but also encourages focus and precision. Beyond the technical skills, this programme fosters an appreciation for 3-dimensional art, material properties, and the enduring legacy of metal crafts across cultures. From ancient Egyptian amulets and South American ceremonial pieces to European repoussé and the intricate metalwork found in Southeast Asian traditions, students will see the global threads of this art form. The stages involved are excellent for developing fine motor skills, patience, methodical thinking, and process planning. Customised to be age and ability-appropriate, the workshop aims to cultivate interest, build confidence, and empower students to create objects of lasting beauty and personal expression, connecting them to a rich artistic heritage. LEVEL DIFFERENTIATION (Applied across all sessions): Younger Students/Beginners (e.g., Upper Primary): Simpler design choices (provide more structured templates). Focus on achieving clear lines and basic low relief. Larger, simpler tools might be easier to handle. More direct guidance on each step. Finishing might be limited to simple polishing. Older Students/More Advanced (e.g., Secondary): Can create more complex original designs. Encouraged to experiment with higher relief, more intricate textures, and overlapping elements. Can explore more nuanced use of tools. May handle the paint-wash finishing technique with more independence.
