Programme Synopsis This workshop, which has been developed and honed over the last 20 years by Singapore’s storytelling pioneer Sheila Wee, offers students a way to learn storytelling skills in an encouraging and supportive atmosphere. Storytelling techniques will be taught through engaging practical activities that harness the students’ natural storytelling abilities and foster the development of their own storytelling style. This holistic approach to the teaching of storytelling encourages and motivates students and gives them a strong foundation in effective story learning and performance techniques. OUTLINE • Demo storytelling by a skilled and experienced professsioal storyteller. • Accessing imagery thinking through visualisation techniques. • What is storytelling? Understanding what storytelling is and how it differs from story reading and the recitation of literary stories. • What types of stories work best for oral storytelling? • Understanding the structure of a well-crafted story. • How to use knowledge of story structure to create an effective original story. • Organic Storytelling - fun group activities that promote creativity and thinking on your feet. • Understanding the elements of vocal expression. • Storytelling performance techniques. • How to retell a story without memorising the words. A step-by-step process for internalising story structure and generating original details that gives students the ability to create their own unique version of the story. PLEASE NOTE: EACH WORKSHOP WILL BE CUSTOMISED ACCORDING TO THE AGE AND ABILITIES OF THE STUDENTS. The workshop can be condensed to expanded to any time frame from 2-hours to 10-hours. The basic 6-hour workshop can be customised to be carried out as a: 3 x 2-hour sessions 2 x 3 hour sessions 4 x 1.5 hour sessions A full day workshop ABOUT STORYWISE Storywise was founded and is run by Sheila Wee, a Singaporean storyteller who has been a professional storyteller since 1998. Because of her work to pioneer the revival of storytelling in Singapore, she has become known as Singapore’s Godmother of Storytelling. As well as running Storywise, Sheila is a Founding Director of the Federation of Asian Storytellers (FEAST). Sheila’s international work as a performer and workshop leader has taken her to Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, the UK and Vietnam. Many of them began their careers as teachers and so are very comfortable in a school environment.

The Tote Board Arts Grant was introduced in 1995 to encourage the development of a vibrant arts culture in schools, and to promote arts appreciation amongst students.

Each year, all MOE schools and ITE Colleges may opt-in to receive the Arts Grant. Schools may use the grant to subsidise the purchase of programmes under the NAC-AEP and for the Artist-in-School Scheme (AISS).

All approved programmes are listed on the NAC-AEP Directory and come with a valid Letter of Eligibility.

Please ensure that a valid Letter of Eligibility (LOE) is obtained. Note that MOE procurement guidelines apply.

Payment should be made directly to the programme provider. Claims for the Arts Grant should be made via IFAAS and in accordance to Grant Guidelines.

Programme providers are permitted to make changes to the following aspects of an NAC-AEP, according to the school’s needs:

  • Programme duration, including no. of sessions
  • Cost of programme
  • Class size



Under the above conditions, schools can make claims based on revised programme costs using the same Programme ID listed on the Letter of Eligibility (LOE).

The following changes are not permitted when customising programmes:

  • Changes to content
  • Inclusion of non-approved instructor(s)

Storywise

Storywise was founded and is run by Sheila Wee, a Singaporean storyteller who has been living and breathing storytelling since 1998.  Because of her work to pioneer the revival of storytelling in Singapore, she has become known as Singapore’s Godmother of Storytelling. As well as running Storywise, Sheila is a Founding Director of the Federation of Asian Storytellers (FEAST). Sheila’s international work as a performer and workshop leader has taken her to Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, the UK and Vietnam. She is comfortable telling to both small and large audiences of all ages and is adept at varying her storytelling style according to her audience. Her storytelling has been described variously, as warm, engaging, elegant and captivating. Sheila teaches storytelling across a broad range of applications; from using storytelling in all levels of education, from preschool to university, to the use of storytelling in organisations and cultural institutions.  Storywise has strong team of highly experienced professional storytellers endorsed by the NAC for AEP programmes in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Not only are they experienced teaching artists, but almost all of them were teachers before they became professional storytellers.
