Programme Synopsis Vintage Memory celebrates our Singaporean spirit and resilience. Portrayed through the daily life of the three-generation Lin family, this multi-media dance theatre relives the sacrifice and hard work our pioneers contributed in the early years for our nation building. Singapore has grown and changed rapidly. Our landscape resembles the adaptability of a chameleon. New condominiums and businesses are sprouting quickly, while nostalgic landmarks and traditional trades are on the brink of extinction. In this ever-evolving little red dot, it is easy to lose sight of our cultural identity. Vintage Memory wants to preserve these memories for our young generation, ignites our sense of belonging, reminds us to remain resilient and united in harmony. Rebecca had just returned home from school. She was complaining about the crowded MRT as she slumped herself to the bed. She then got up and tried to practise her Hip Hop routine for her dance performance. But, it was an extremely hot and humid day in Singapore. Rebecca was unable to focus. In the kitchen, there was a beautiful aroma of Nasi Padang. Grandma was dancing and humming to the tune of Geylang Sipaku Geylang as she cooked. There was a smile on her face. She reminisced her younger years living in the kampong. Chickens would roam freely and neighbours were always showing up at the door with some home-cooked food or sweet kueh kueh. The phone rang. Jun Jie called as he was driving home from work. “Ma, on my way back now. I am super hungry. Oh, by the way, do you remember Haw Par Vila? My favourite theme park when I was a little boy? There will be a Pasar Malam this coming Saturday. Shall we go?” Vintage Memory gives us a sneak peek into the life of the Lin family for a day. What is your memory and story? Highlights* • Dance choreography to 60s-90s oldies music by local song writers such as Step by Step by Liang Wen Fun, Mr Twister by the crescendos; traditional folk song Geylang Sipaku Geylang • Video footages/photographs of nostalgic demolished landmarks and old traditional trades This programme comes with an online resource blog where students can embark on self-directed learning to further reflect and articulate their thoughts and ideas.
