Programme Synopsis Batik is a traditional method of making patterns on cloth that was adapted as a painting medium by pioneer artists in Malaya producing exotic paintings that resonate with South East Asian culture. These batik paintings are displayed in our national gallery collection as testament of our rich cultural heritage. The program will expose students to the material culture of batik and generations of batik artists in the Singapore art-ecosystem that has brought the batik painting medium from craft to abstraction and contemporary art. Our workshops are a safe and systematic introduction to the art of traditional batik painting using specially designed learner-centric methods and materials to create authentic batik paintings with either hot or cold wax method. Programme can be extended to cover advanced techniques and complex painting projects. For digital format or blended workshops, art materials is packed individually by project or lesson and distributed to students to follow the lesson remotely through step-by-step guidance and interaction with the artist instructor over the internet on Zoom.
