Programme Synopsis Weaving Our World Heritage. Embark on a vibrant journey through the world of weaving! This hands-on workshop explores weaving not only as a vital part of Singapore's multicultural heritage but also as a universal human expression connecting diverse cultures across the globe. Students will discover how this ancient craft, fostering patience and methodical thinking, is woven into the fabric of societies worldwide. We'll begin by exploring Singapore's rich traditions – from Chinese bamboo work and Peranakan 'Bakul Siah,' to Malay Songket, Ketupat and Pandanus mats, Indian textile arts, and Arab rug patterns. Expanding to African coiled baskets, intricate Japanese bamboo art to the tapestry traditions of European cultures. Students will see how contemporary artists, like Yee I-Lann’s pandanus mat project presented at the National gallery and Singapore Art Museum, draw inspiration from global issues and local legacies in the region. Through immersive, hands-on sessions, students will learn fundamental weaving techniques – including plaiting, coiling, and twinning – by experimenting with varied materials. They'll start with accessible paper weaving to grasp core concepts and then progress to creating a unique 3D piece using natural fibres (like pandanus or raffia, subject to age) or innovative recycled materials (like "plarn" from plastic bags or fabric strips). This fosters environmental awareness alongside developing crucial fine motor skills and process planning. Designed to be age-appropriate and deeply engaging, this workshop cultivates an appreciation for structural design, cultural diversity, and sustainable practices, sparking a lasting interest in this tangible and globally shared art form.
